Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)

In second grade, students continue developing strong reading and writing skills through Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), while expanding their knowledge across history, science, and literature.

In the Skills strand, students build on their phonics foundation by learning more advanced spelling patterns, vowel teams, and multisyllabic word decoding. Instruction focuses on reading fluency, spelling, grammar, and paragraph writing. Students practice reading longer texts with increasing accuracy and expression, while continuing to strengthen comprehension and written communication.

In the Knowledge strand, students explore engaging topics that build both knowledge and vocabulary. These units include studies of ancient civilizations, the human body systems, insects, immigration, and important periods in American history such as the Civil War and westward expansion. Through reading, listening, discussion, and writing, students deepen their understanding of these subjects while strengthening their ability to explain and analyze information.

Together, CKLA Skills and Knowledge help students become fluent readers while developing a strong base of academic knowledge and vocabulary.

Eureka Math²

Eureka Math²

In second grade, students expand their understanding of numbers and operations as they work with larger numbers and more complex problem solving. They deepen their knowledge of place value, working with numbers up to 1,000 and using this understanding to add and subtract efficiently.

Students learn to represent and interpret data using graphs, solve multi-step problems, and apply math strategies in a variety of situations. They also explore time, money, and measurement, strengthening their ability to apply math to real-world contexts. Additionally, students begin building a foundation for future learning by exploring early concepts of multiplication and division through equal groups and repeated addition.
