Our Curriculum
At Cogito Academy, our curriculum is designed to develop the whole child—intellectually, morally, and physically. Through a rich academic program, daily enrichment opportunities, and a strong emphasis on character, students are equipped with the knowledge, habits, and virtues needed to flourish in school and in life.
Core Virtues
Character formation is at the heart of a classical education. Throughout the school year, students learn about and practice core virtues such as:
Respect
Responsibility
Perseverance
Honesty
Courage
Kindness
Teachers intentionally weave these virtues into classroom discussions, literature, and daily interactions. Students are encouraged to reflect on their choices, support one another, and develop the habits that build strong character and leadership.
CKLA – English Language Arts
Our literacy instruction is built around Core Knowledge Language Arts, a nationally recognized program grounded in the science of reading.
CKLA develops strong readers through two powerful components:
Skills Instruction
Explicit phonics and decoding instruction
Spelling and grammar development
Reading fluency practice
Knowledge Building
Rich read-alouds and texts in history, science, and literature
Vocabulary development through meaningful context
Writing connected to content learning
By building both reading skills and background knowledge, students develop strong comprehension and a lifelong love of learning.
Eureka Math²
Mathematics instruction is guided by Eureka Math², a research-based program designed to help students deeply understand mathematical concepts.
Eureka Math² emphasizes:
Conceptual understanding before memorization
Problem-solving and mathematical reasoning
Multiple strategies for solving problems
Clear connections between math concepts
Students learn to explain their thinking, apply math to real-world situations, and build confidence as mathematical thinkers.
Daily Enrichment
At Cogito Academy, students enjoy daily enrichment opportunities that nurture the whole child:
Physical Education (P.E.) – everyday
Music OR Art – everyday
Daily enrichment supports:
Physical health and coordination
Creativity and artistic expression
Confidence and collaboration
Appreciation for music, visual arts, and movement
These experiences allow students to explore their talents, develop new skills, and return to their core academics energized and engaged.

Thoughtful Use of Technology
While technology can be a helpful educational tool, we believe that young students learn best through direct instruction, discussion, books, and hands-on learning.
For this reason:
Technology is used sparingly and intentionally
Students spend the majority of their day engaged with teachers, books, and classmates
Screen time is limited and purposeful
This approach supports stronger attention, deeper thinking, and meaningful relationships within the classroom.
No Homework Policy
At Cogito Academy, we believe that elementary students learn best when their school day is focused, meaningful, and well-structured. Because students engage in rigorous learning during the school day, we do not assign nightly homework.
Instead, students are encouraged to use their time after school to:
Read for enjoyment
Spend time with family
Play, explore, and be physically active
Pursue hobbies and interests
Research shows that young students benefit greatly from time to rest, play, and develop strong family relationships. Our goal is for students to leave school feeling accomplished and return the next day refreshed and ready to learn.
