Columbia, SC - The South Carolina Society of the National Society Daughters of Colonial Wars has recognized Van Steen of Cogito Academy Lancaster as the recipient of the South Carolina Outstanding American History Teacher Award. The honor was presented by Ms. Aliene Humphries during a ceremony held in Columbia, SC, on February 26, 2026.
With this recognition, Steen has been named the South Carolina nominee for the National Outstanding American History Teacher of the Year which will be awarded in April 2026.
Steen brings more than 17 years of experience in education to his role at Cogito Academy. He began his career at Andrew Jackson Middle School before transitioning to Andrew Jackson High School, where he specialized in United States History and built a reputation for making history engaging and meaningful for students.
Today, Steen serves as the Instructional Coach at Cogito Academy Lancaster, a tuition-free public charter school. With a strong understanding of the school’s academic structure and model, he works closely with teachers to strengthen instruction, mentor educators, and help ensure students receive a rigorous and engaging academic experience.
In the school’s inaugural year, he has helped shape Cogito Academy’s academic culture while supporting teachers in building a strong foundation for student success.

As part of the award presentation, Steen delivered a lecture highlighting the courage of Lydia Mackey during the American Revolution, demonstrating his dedication to bringing South Carolina’s rich history to life.

American history tells the story of the ideas and perseverance that shaped our nation, and I feel incredibly fortunate to help bring those stories to life for students and teachers each day." said Steen. "Being part of the Cogito Academy community, where there is such a strong commitment to academic excellence and civic understanding, makes this work especially meaningful. At the end of the day, everything I do is for the students.”
